Like a Bad Wi-Fi Signal, I’ve Returned

Hello Friends,

It’s been a while since I last posted here, and quite a lot has happened in the meantime.

On the global stage, the U.S.-China trade war has continued to reshape economic alliances and stir geopolitical tension. Closer to home, we witnessed a rather unusual development: 49 Afrikaner “refugees” departed for the United States this week, due to their strong opposition to South Africa’s policies of redress.

President Cyril Ramaphosa didn’t mince words in his response. He called the group, which reportedly includes an obese car salesman from Pretoria, “cowards,” noting: “They’ll be back soon. As South Africans, we are resilient. We don't run away from our problems. We must stay here and solve them. When you run away, you are a coward, and that’s a real cowardly act.”

"Welcome to the land of the free," Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau said as he received the white South Africans who landed at Dulles airport near Washington DC on Monday.

In the world of sports, the mighty and respectable Orlando Pirates suffered a tough loss in the Nedbank Cup final at the hands of longtime rivals Kaizer Chiefs, a match that left fans on both sides buzzing.

Economically, things have been equally intense. The unemployment rate has crept up from 31.9% to 32.9%, a sobering reminder of the challenges we continue to face as a country, as far as job creation efforts are concerned.

And perhaps most notably, President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days, a meeting that is sure to have interesting diplomatic implications.

So, how have you been? I hope life has been treating you well.

Starting next week, I’ll be posting more regularly, aiming for at least one piece per week. So stay tuned, and watch this space!
